Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and five years of experience.� Licensed and registered as a veterinary technician.� Lab Animal Technologist (LATG) certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science(AALAS).� If not AALAS certified (Assistant Lab Animal Technician (ALAT) or Lab Animal Technician (LAT)), certification examination must be taken within 12 months of hire, followed by an effort to achieve the Licensed Animal Technologist (LATG) certification within 36 additional months.� If AALAS certified, but not at LATG level, effort is required to achieve the LATG certification within 24 months of hire.� Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset the educational requirements.� Grade EF
Position Description:
The primary function is to coordinate and oversee the veterinary care of the University’s rodents and to manage and maintain supply, equipment and instrument inventory, to maintain records of equipment and facility maintenance, and calibration certification, to perform billing for the technical service center, to coordinate and schedule work flow and personnel activities, to supervise and train veterinary technicians, and to train research staff in related procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities�
Manage and schedule the rodent veterinary support facilities per regulatory requirements. Conduct facility orientation tours for new users of the facilities. Assure that support areas well maintained per appropriate standard operating procedures. Assure that monthly sanitization schedules are maintained.
Medical Supply and Equipment Inventory Management
Ensures equipment is maintained and available for all necessary veterinary care and treatment procedures as well as emergency needs. Maintains equipment and coordinates repair/replacement of equipment as needed. Maintains or supervises accurate medical supply, equipment and instrument inventory.. Performs or supervises monthly checks for expired medical materials. Performs quality assurance checks on equipment as needed or schedules this with qualified individuals. Make recommendations for the replacement or addition of medications, equipment and instrumentation.
Regulatory Compliance and Record keeping
Maintains all records for veterinary care and accurately and legibly records all required information according to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for regulatory compliance.
Financial Records
Make sure that all services and supplies are billed for accurately and in a timely manner.
Under the direction of the clinical veterinarian, train and supervise veterinary associates in the provision of veterinary care to UofL research animals according to all applicable local, state, and federal policies and regulations.� The provision of veterinary care includes:
Monitor rodents to assess health and to assure compliance with all space requirements set forth in the “Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”.
Identification of animals that require medical treatments and in consultation with the veterinarian, administer medications and provide subsequent evaluations of response to therapy.
Carry out proper sample collection (such as blood for hematology and or clinical chemistry values), ensuring appropriate sample storage and the coordination of testing with outside diagnostic laboratories.
Performance of standard parasitology tests.
Maintenance of detailed records regarding veterinary examination, treatments, and experimental procedures using appropriate computer skills to carry out such duties.
Carry out or supervise proper sample collection for the rodent sentinel program.
Assist the veterinarians to provide training to the animal care and research staff on various subjects that include but are not limited to: 1) humane handling for research animals, 2) euthanasia of commonly used laboratory animals according to guidelines of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 3) anesthesia, analgesia, and tranquilization of laboratory animals, 4) pre-and post-surgical care for laboratory animals
Write, implement, and evaluate standard operating procedures. Perform annual review of standard operating procedures and revise as needed.
Coordinate and schedule work flow and personnel activities.
Professional Development
Read published materials such as the Guide and Animal Welfare Regulations to ensure that the veterinary care and support facilities are in compliance at all times.� Prepare for� AALAS certification exams.� Meet Continuing Education (CE) requirements to maintain any specialized licensure (e.g. licensed veterinary technician).� Competencies/Skills: Continuous improvement.
First line oversight of the RRF veterinary diagnostic laboratory. Supervise technicians performing diagnostic tests within the laboratory. Oversee the maintenance of equipment in the laboratory and the recordkeeping of maintenance and calibration of the equipment in accordance with applicable regulations.
Target Compensation Maximum:
$72,826.00
Target Compensation Minimum:
$47,476.00
Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
